a rant abt wow
ive been a wow player ever since i was like 5 or 6 when my dad first introduced me to the game, mainly to just make a character and run around, but even that stuck with me as something really fun and enjoyable. it was the burning crusade expansion and my character was a blood elf! i love the blood elves so so much.
which is why the direction wow is taking/has been taking for the past years is really putting me off the game. not in the typical wow player dude reaction where they complain abt woke and diversity, that is good. it just feels like a lot of the newer writing is shallow, and it sort of feels like its.. making the game more "child friendly" if i can say that lol.
what i mean by that is mainly that the game is downplaying character building, story conflicts and development (that has also been around for ages) in favor of making everybody a good guy. it feels like nobody is allowed to be flawed, morally gray or just straight up a bad guy.
the blood elves are a good example of this. a race of elves that i originally loved to bits because they were morally gray, and straight up evil sometimes too. they were trying to survive and to do that they were doing everything to be able to do so. which is good! its good storytelling!
but now in the newest expansion. i dont even have words lol. there is no appeal to the blood elves anymore, they have been watered down so badly that theyre identity as blood elves dont even matter, they could be humans or other elves for that matter and the plot would be almost the same in terms of their characterization. they are not allowed to be morally gray or "dubious" elves that i loved. there is also nothing tying them down to the horde.
all in all, it just feels really sad to see this direction being taken because it makes everything so boring too. and its also really sad because the 6 year old me who fell in love with the evil elves in her favorite walking simulator is being taken to the back and put down.
